The Wandering Earth is a 2019 Chinese science fiction film directed by Frant Gwo, who co-wrote the screenplay with Gong Geer and Yan Dongxu. Facing the Sun's expansion and the threat it poses to Earth within a century, humanity unites around a vast engineering project: giant engines built across the planet that push it out of the Solar System toward a new home about four light years away, on a journey lasting generations. Years into the voyage, the planet approaches Jupiter, whose gravity disrupts its path and endangers the entire undertaking, leaving a group of people to act. Wu Jing, Qu Chuxiao, Li Guangjie, Ng Man-tat, Zhao Jinmai and Michael Kai Sui lead a credited cast of 33.
The film was made on a budget of 50 million USD and became a major commercial success, earning 702 million USD worldwide. It was the first feature Gwo directed, followed by The Wandering Earth: Beyond, The Sacrifice and The Wandering Earth II. Gong Geer produced.
The film holds an IMDb rating of 5.9 from 39,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 6.6 from 1,211 votes, while critics gave it 6.2 from 40 reviews. The audience scores sit close to the critics' rating, with the TMDB figure slightly above it and the IMDb figure slightly below it.
