Septet: The Story of Hong Kong is an anthology film consisting of seven segments. It examines the history of Hong Kong, spanning from the 1940s through to the present day. Through various artistic perspectives, the film explores the evolution of the city across different eras.

The project was initiated by Johnnie To and directed by a group of seven filmmakers: Johnnie To, Sammo Hung, Ann Hui, Patrick Tam, Yuen Woo-Ping, Ringo Lam, and Tsui Hark. For Sammo Hung, this was the 16th film he directed, following The Bodyguard. For Johnnie To, it was the 23rd. The film sits in the middle of Ann Hui's chronology between A Simple Life and Elegies. It is the second of two films directed by Patrick Tam, following My Heart Is That Eternal Rose. Ringo Lam directed this after Wild City, while Tsui Hark directed it before Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants. Yuen Woo-Ping directed this as his 12th film, followed by Blades of the Guardians.
