Short description
Extraction is an action thriller about Tyler Rake, a black-market mercenary whose assignment is to recover the abducted son of a crime boss. Sent to Bangladesh, he finds the job far more dangerous than expected, and the rescue turns into a fight to stay alive while he confronts questions about his own life. The screenplay is by Joe Russo, and the film is produced by Anthony Russo, Joe Russo and Chris Hemsworth.
The film marks the directorial debut of Sam Hargrave, who had worked as a stunt coordinator and second-unit director. It is the first in a series that continued with Extraction 2 in 2023 and, later in his chronological filmography, Matchbox the Movie in 2026. Chris Hemsworth leads as Tyler Rake, with Rudhraksh Jaiswal as the kidnapped boy Ovi Mahajan, Randeep Hooda as Saju, Golshifteh Farahani as Nik Khan, Pankaj Tripathi as Ovi Mahajan Sr. and David Harbour as Gaspar. The production involved 57 credited cast members and 139 credited crew.
Made for a budget of 65 million USD, the film drew a large audience: it holds a 6.8 rating on IMDb from around 288,000 votes and a 7.3 on TMDB from roughly 6,800 votes, while critics rated it 6.2 from 221 reviews. Viewers therefore tended to respond to it more warmly than reviewers did, and the scale of voting suggests it reached a very wide public.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the filming of some chase scenes, director Sam Hargrave became the camera operator and stuntman, filming these scenes himself while strapped to the bumper of the pursuing car.
- Manoj Bajpayee was initially cast as Ovi, but was later replaced by Pankaj Tripathi.
- Filming took place from November 2018 to March 2019.
- The film is set in Bangladesh, but all the Bengalis in the film are played by Indians.
- The film was shot in Ahmedabad, India, and the locals were thrilled to see Chris Hemsworth in person. Some fans stood by the set for 15 hours straight just to catch a glimpse of him.
- According to director Sam Hargrave, the ban on firearms in India was so strict that they had to import rubber guns with no moving parts into the country for filming. In the first rescue scene, for example, these rubber guns were used, and not a single blank was fired. The entire scene had to be animated during post-production using digital technology to create the impression that the weapons were being fired.
