Young-goon is admitted to a psychiatric hospital after an incident in which she wires herself to a socket, convinced she is a combat cyborg who draws energy from batteries rather than food. She refuses to eat, listens for messages from radios and vending machines, and grows steadily weaker. Il-soon, a fellow patient who believes he can take on the traits of people he observes and habitually hides behind a mask, becomes close to her and sets out to persuade her that she is human and can eat. Around them the ward holds a set of other patients, each absorbed in their own private world.
Park Chan-wook directed and co-wrote the film with Chung Seo-kyung, and produced it with Chun-yeong Lee. It followed Lady Vengeance in his filmography and was his sixth feature, arriving between that revenge drama and Thirst. Lim Soo-jung plays Young-goon and the singer Rain plays Il-soon, with Oh Dal-su, Lee Yeong-mi, Kim Chun-gi and Park Jun-myun in supporting roles.
Released in December 2006, the film is a romance-comedy-drama set largely inside the institution. Its worldwide box office was about 4 million USD, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.9/10 from around 27,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7/10 from roughly 628 votes. A film critics' rating of 7.3/10 from 12 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores recorded on IMDb.
