Emma Woodhouse is a wealthy, clever and self-assured young woman living in an English village at the start of the nineteenth century. Having decided she will never marry and leave her father alone, she turns her attention to matchmaking among the people around her, taking a young orphan, Harriet Smith, under her wing and setting out to arrange her romantic future. Emma believes she reads other people's hearts accurately, and her confidence in that skill leads her into mistakes about her own feelings as well as those of her friends.
The film is an adaptation of Jane Austen's novel, directed by Autumn de Wilde in her feature debut from a screenplay by Eleanor Catton. Anya Taylor-Joy plays Emma, with Johnny Flynn as George Knightley, Mia Goth as Harriet Smith, Josh O'Connor as Mr. Elton, Callum Turner as Frank Churchill and Miranda Hart as Miss Bates. It was produced in the United Kingdom by Working Title Films, Blueprint Pictures, Perfect World Pictures and Focus Features.
Made for about 10 million dollars, the film took roughly 26 million dollars worldwide, a solid return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 71,000 votes, while on TMDB it scores 7 out of 10 from about 2,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 out of 10 from 260 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
