Hoosiers
Short description
Hoosiers is a sports drama set in a small Indiana town in the early 1950s. Norman Dale, a college coach whose career has stalled, is hired to take charge of the local high school basketball team. His players are wary of him, the townspeople distrust his methods and his temper, and he clashes with those who want him replaced. He makes an unusual choice of assistant by bringing in Shooter, a former local basketball figure known for his drinking. Meanwhile, a teacher urges the team's most gifted player, Jimmy Chitwood, to step back from the game and attend to his studies, leaving Dale to build a competitive side without him.
The film was directed by David Anspaugh, the first of the four features he directed, from a screenplay by Angelo Pizzo, who produced with Carter DeHaven. Gene Hackman leads as Dale, with Barbara Hershey as Myra Fleener, Dennis Hopper as Shooter, Sheb Wooley, Maris Valainis and David Neidorf among a credited cast of 48. Made for about 6 million dollars, it returned roughly 29 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.4 out of 10 from around 57,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from more than 600 votes. A critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 49 reviews places it above both audience scores.
