Wrath of the Titans
Short description
Wrath of the Titans continues the story of Perseus, the demigod son of Zeus, a decade after he defeated the sea monster known as the Kraken. Perseus has settled into a quiet life as a village fisherman and is raising his young son, Helius, hoping to leave his heroic past behind. Meanwhile, the gods are losing their hold on the imprisoned Titans and their leader, Kronos, because humanity has stopped worshipping them. When Hades and Ares ally with Kronos in a plot against Zeus, Perseus is drawn back into battle. He travels into the underworld alongside the warrior queen Andromeda, the demigod Agenor and the fallen god Hephaestus, seeking to rescue Zeus and stop the Titans.
The film is a sequel set in the same mythological world as the earlier Clash of the Titans. Sam Worthington again plays Perseus, with Liam Neeson as Zeus, Ralph Fiennes as Hades, Rosamund Pike as Andromeda, Bill Nighy as Hephaestus and Edgar Ramírez as Ares. It was directed by Jonathan Liebesman, its fourth feature and the one that followed Battle: Los Angeles in his filmography. The screenplay is by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Dan Mazeau, and the producers include Basil Iwanyk and Polly Johnsen.
Released in March 2012, the film had a budget of 150 million US dollars and grossed about 302 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.7 from roughly 203,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.8 from around 4,600 votes. The critics' rating is 4.5 out of 10 from 176 reviews, notably lower than the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Gemma Arterton was supposed to join the cast and reprise her role from 'Clash of the Titans' (Louis Leterrier, 2010), but this was prevented by a commitment to film with Tommy Wirkola in the fantasy action film 'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters' (2012). In the case of Andromeda, it was decided to change the actress (in the first film this character was played by Alexa Davalos, and in the second by Rosamund Pike), while Io, Arterton's character from the first film, was completely removed from the script.
- Filming took place in London, South Wales, and on the Canary Island of Tenerife.
- Work on a sequel titled 'Wrath of the Titans' had begun, but the idea was abandoned due to the film's box office failure.
- The sound made by the Minotaur is actually the sound made by elephants. This same sound was present in the 1997 animated film 'Hercules'.
- Hayley Atwell, Georgina Haig, Janet Montgomery, Dominique McElligott, and Clemence Poesy were considered for the role of Andromeda.
