Ashfall

When the volcano on Mount Baekdu erupts along the border between North Korea and China, the shocks reach both Koreas and scientists warn that a far larger blast could destroy much of the peninsula. A South Korean geoscientist, Kang Bong-rae, proposes a drastic fix: detonate nuclear devices inside the mountain to release the pressure building beneath it. Because the South has no such weapons, a special forces demolitions team led by Jo In-chang is sent north to secure one, and the mission depends on a North Korean agent, Lee Jun-pyeong, who knows where the warheads are stored. The two sides must work together while In-chang's pregnant wife tries to stay safe in Seoul.

Kim Byung-seo and Lee Hae-jun direct, following Kim's Cold Eyes (2013) and Lee's Castaway on the Moon (2009). The screenplay was written by Lim Joon-hyung, Lee Hae-jun and Kwak Jeong-deok. Lee Byung-hun, Ha Jung-woo and Ma Dong-seok lead a cast of 75 credited actors, with Jeon Hye-jin, Suzy and Lee Kyung-young in supporting roles. Made for around 27 million USD, the film took about 61 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.2/10 from roughly 7,200 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9/10 from around 654 votes. A critics' score of 5.8/10 from 11 reviews places it below both audience results.
