The Tomorrow War
Short description
Time travelers from 2051 arrive in the present to warn humanity that a global war against a lethal alien species will be lost in thirty years. To prevent extinction, soldiers and civilians from the present are recruited and transported to the future to join the fight. Dan Forester, a high school teacher and former soldier, is among those drafted. To secure a future for his daughter, Dan works alongside a scientist and his estranged father to try and change the fate of the world.
Directed by Chris McKay, this action and science fiction film was the second feature he directed, following The Lego Batman Movie and preceding Renfield. The movie stars Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, J.K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson, and Edwin Hodge. It was produced by Skydance, Lit Entertainment Group, and Phantom Four, with a screenplay by Zach Dean.
The film had a budget of 200 million USD but earned 14 million USD at the worldwide box office. On IMDb, it holds a rating of 6.6/10 based on 252,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a score of 7.5/10 from 4,468 votes. Film critics gave the movie a lower rating of 5.7/10 based on 208 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Paramount Pictures filmed this movie for theatrical release, but due to the pandemic, sold it to Amazon Prime Video for $200 million.
- According to director Chris McKay, the image of the muscular old man played by J.K. Simmons was based on viral photos of Simmons from Instagram in 2016, posted by his trainer and actor Aaron V. Williamson. The series of gym photos show Simmons with a large gray beard and a tank top, exercising and clearly displaying his musculature. When it came time to find an actor for the role of Chris Pratt’s character’s tough father, McKay immediately remembered these photos.
- Most of the actors underwent weapons training in a boot camp.
- According to Chris Pratt, the winter scenes in Russia were filmed on a glacier in Iceland, where nothing had ever been filmed before. A few weeks before filming began, two bodies were found in a crevasse, apparently from around 1940.
- In the original script, soldiers from the past were secretly given a toxin that would eventually kill the aliens who devoured them. This nuance explained why the soldiers didn't need special training, but the idea was ultimately abandoned.
