Love Aaj Kal follows two love stories set thirty years apart. In 2020, Zoe and Veer are a modern couple whose relationship is tested when her professional ambitions pull against her feelings for him. In 1990, a different pair of lovers face obstacles rooted in the social restrictions of their time. The film moves between the two eras to consider whether love works the same way across generations, and how much the distance of three decades changes what people are willing to sacrifice for it.
The film is directed and written by Imtiaz Ali, who also produces alongside Dinesh Vijan. It is his fifth feature, arriving between Tamasha in 2015 and Amar Singh Chamkila in 2024. Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan star as Veer and Zoe, with Arushi Sharma and R. Bhakti Klein in supporting roles. Made under the banners Reliance Entertainment, Maddock Films, Window Seat Films and Jio Studios, it runs 141 minutes and was released in February 2020.
Audience response was muted: on IMDb it holds 4.7 from roughly 11,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.6 from a much smaller group of voters. Both figures sit well below the ratings usually attached to the director's earlier work, suggesting the film did not connect with viewers in the way his previous romances had.
