My Spy

My Spy centres on J.J., a hardened CIA operative who is sent undercover with his colleague Bobbi to keep watch on a widow and her family. The surveillance goes wrong when the woman's nine-year-old daughter, Sophie, discovers the hidden cameras and works out what J.J. really does for a living. Rather than expose him, she offers a trade: she keeps quiet about his identity if he teaches her how to be a spy. The reluctant partnership pushes the veteran agent well outside his usual routine.

Peter Segal directed the film, which he also produced, from a screenplay by Erich and Jon Hoeber. It sits between Second Act and My Spy The Eternal City in Segal's directing credits; he had previously made comedies including Get Smart, 50 First Dates and Anger Management. Dave Bautista plays J.J., with Chloe Coleman as Sophie, Parisa Fitz-Henley as Kate, Kristen Schaal as Bobbi, Greg Bryk as Marquez and Ken Jeong as David Kim.

Released in January 2020, the action comedy runs 99 minutes and was made by STX Films, Good Fear and MWM Studios on a budget of 18 million US dollars, against a worldwide gross of around 10 million. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 41,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from about 1,400 votes. A critics' score of 5.4 from 127 reviews places it below those audience figures.
