A meteor shower over Japan releases hundreds of insect-like creatures that become known as Legion. The swarm spreads through the sewers and subway tunnels below the cities, where it cultivates a giant fungus that produces oxygen at levels dangerous to human life, prompting the military to step in. When the armed forces cannot contain the growing threat, Gamera, the giant flying turtle, appears to fight the evolving alien invaders.
Shusuke Kaneko directed the film as the second entry in his Gamera trilogy, following Gamera: The Guardian of the Universe in 1995. Kazunori Ito wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Toshiyuki Nagashima, Miki Mizuno, Tamotsu Ishibashi, Mitsuru Fukikoshi, Ayako Fujitani and Yukijiro Hotaru, with 46 credited performers in total. Nippon Television Network Corporation, Daiei Film and Tokuma International produced the 99-minute movie, which was released in Japan on July 12, 1996 and took about 14 million dollars worldwide.
Reception has been positive on both audience platforms, with 7.4 out of 10 on TMDB and 7 out of 10 on IMDb, the latter drawn from roughly 3,500 votes. After this film, Kaneko went on to direct Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris in 1999 and later Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack in 2001.
