Interview with the Vampire
Short description
A vampire named Louis tells his life story to a journalist in a modern-day San Francisco hotel room. His account reaches back to the eighteenth century, when, as a grieving plantation owner in Louisiana, he was turned into a vampire by the charismatic Lestat. Louis struggles with his new nature and his refusal to kill, while his bond with Lestat shifts between dependence and open hostility. Lestat later turns a young girl, Claudia, into a vampire so that the three can live as a kind of family, but the arrangement carries its own tensions. Neil Jordan directed the film, the sixth of fifteen features in his filmography, following The Crying Game and preceding Michael Collins. Anne Rice wrote the screenplay from her own novel.
Tom Cruise plays Lestat, Brad Pitt plays Louis, and Kirsten Dunst plays Claudia, with Antonio Banderas as Armand and Christian Slater as the interviewer, Malloy. The production, backed by Geffen Pictures with David Geffen and Stephen Woolley producing, cost sixty million dollars and took about two hundred twenty-four million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.5 out of 10 across roughly 375,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 out of 10 from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from sixty-five reviews places it near the audience scores rather than sharply apart from them, though the far larger IMDb sample carries more weight than the smaller TMDB and critics' totals.

- At the latitude of Paris (48°52′ north latitude), the sun is never at its zenith, meaning the execution of women in the “sun pit” could not have occurred as shown in the film. However, the pit could have been dug at an angle.
- Lestat's birthday coincides with that of Stan Rice – November 7th.
- Anne Rice's bestselling novel "Interview with the Vampire" was originally written in 1969 as a short story. In 1973, the story was reworked into a novel, and a year and a half later, the "Knopf" publishing house offered the writer $12,000 for its publication.
- Rivers Phoenix was originally planned for the role of the journalist, but he died. Christina Ricci auditioned for the role of Claudia, and Johnny Depp was invited for the role of Lestat.
