Safe House

CIA officer Matt Weston has spent a year in Cape Town minding a safe house, a posting with little action and no sign of the career he wants. That changes when Tobin Frost, a former agency operative who has eluded capture for roughly a decade and sold secrets to buyers around the world, is brought in for interrogation. Mercenaries storm the house almost immediately, killing those inside, and Weston escapes with Frost in his charge. Cut off from the agency and unsure who ordered the attack, the inexperienced keeper of the house and the veteran fugitive he is guarding have to keep moving through South Africa while they work out which side is hunting them.

Daniel Espinosa directed from a screenplay by David Guggenheim, with Scott Stuber producing. It was Espinosa's third feature and his first English-language film, following Easy Money. Denzel Washington plays Frost and Ryan Reynolds plays Weston, with Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard and Rubén Blades in supporting roles. The production cost about 85 million dollars and took in some 208 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget.

Audience scores are moderate: on IMDb it sits at 6.7 from roughly 249,000 votes, and on TMDB at 6.5 from about 4,000 votes. A critics' rating of 5.7 from 192 reviews places it below both audience figures.
