Evening

Evening follows two grown daughters, Constance and Nina, as they keep vigil at the bedside of their dying mother, Ann Lord. In her final days, Ann reveals something she has kept hidden for five decades: a single weekend in the 1950s when she was young and was preparing for the wedding of a close friend. During those days she met a man named Harris Arden, and the brief time they shared shaped the rest of her life, including the lives of the daughters now hearing the story for the first time. The film moves between the present, where the sisters confront their mother's illness and their own unsettled lives, and the past, where that weekend unfolds.

Lajos Koltai directed, working from a screenplay by Michael Cunningham and Susan Minot; it was his second feature, arriving between Fateless and Semmelweis. The cast is led by Vanessa Redgrave as the older Ann, with Claire Danes as the young Ann, Toni Collette and Natasha Richardson as her daughters, and Patrick Wilson as Harris. Twenty-six performers are credited.

The film took in about 20 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb and TMDB, audience ratings sit at roughly the middle of the scale, and a critics' rating of 4.9/10 from 129 reviews puts reviewers somewhat below viewers.
