Beyond the Blackboard

Based on a true story, Beyond the Blackboard follows Stacey Bess, a 24-year-old teacher starting her first job in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1987. Expecting a normal classroom, she instead finds herself assigned to a makeshift school housed in a single room at a shelter, serving children whose families have no permanent home. With support from her husband, Greg, she works to give these students an education while confronting shortages of books and supplies, and her own assumptions about the lives of the children she teaches.

The film is directed by Jeff Bleckner, whose preceding television credits include the 1998 thriller Rear Window; his later Remember Sunday followed in 2013. Camille Thomasson wrote the screenplay, and Andrew Gottlieb produced this Hallmark Hall of Fame production. Emily VanCamp leads the cast as Stacey Bess, with Steve Talley as Greg Bess and Willow Shields as Grace. Timothy Busfield, Julio Oscar Mechoso and Nicki Aycox are also among the 27 credited performers in this drama of just over an hour and a half.

On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 7.6 from around 3,100 votes, while on TMDB it rates 7.5 from a much smaller base of about 70 votes. Both figures indicate a generally favorable response, with the larger IMDb sample carrying more weight.
