Two of Us follows Nina and Madeleine, two retired women who have been in a secret relationship for decades. They live in neighbouring apartments on the same floor of a building and move freely between the two homes, appearing to the outside world as nothing more than friendly neighbours. Madeleine's grown children, including her daughter Anne, believe their mother is a grieving widow. The couple plan to sell up and start a new life together in Rome, but Madeleine cannot bring herself to tell her family the truth, and an unexpected event forces the women apart and puts up a barrier between them that Nina must fight to overcome.
The film is the feature debut of director Filippo Meneghetti, who wrote the screenplay with Malysone Bovorasmy and Florence Vignon. Barbara Sukowa plays Nina and Martine Chevallier plays Madeleine, with Léa Drucker as Anne and Jérôme Varanfrain as Frédéric. It is a Belgian, Luxembourgish and French co-production and runs 92 minutes.
Two of Us drew a critics' rating of 7.8 out of 10 from around 100 reviews, while audiences gave it 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 4,300 votes and 7 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of under 200 votes. The narrower gap between the two audience figures and the strong critics' score suggest a film that was well received by reviewers and general viewers alike, though its theatrical audience remained modest, consistent with a European art-house drama.
