Short description
United is a British historical drama about Manchester United's young squad of the 1950s, known as the Busby Babes, who became the youngest team to win the English league under manager Matt Busby. The story turns on the Munich air disaster of February 1958, when the plane carrying the team home from a European Cup match in Belgrade crashed, killing eight of the players along with club staff and journalists. In the aftermath, with the club's directors considering withdrawing from competition, assistant manager Jimmy Murphy begins the work of rebuilding the side.
The film is directed by James Strong, the first feature in his directing career, from a screenplay by Chris Chibnall and produced by Julia Stannard. Sam Claflin appears as Duncan Edwards, with Dean Andrews, Kate Ashfield, Natalie Burt, David Calder and Werner Daehn among the twenty-nine credited cast members. It runs 91 minutes.
Released in 2011, United has an IMDb rating of 7.3 from around 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it holds 6.9 from roughly 180 votes. The much larger vote count on IMDb and the solid score there suggest a film that reached a sizeable audience and was received favourably by many viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming took place in the winter of 2010 and was interrupted by heavy snowfalls. There was no snow only for two days, when the plane crash scene was being filmed, and snow machines had to be used.
- In fact, Duncan Edwards (1936-1958) died after the match against Sheffield. The scriptwriters changed the date of his death to add more drama to the story.
