Short description
Thomas Anderson, known to many as Neo, is living an ordinary life in San Francisco. He holds down a job at a large company and sees a therapist about the troubling dreams he cannot shake, dreams in which he was the chosen one who fought a war against machines. He struggles to tell reality from fiction, and familiar faces returning to his life push him to follow the white rabbit once more, back into the Matrix.
The Matrix Resurrections is Lana Wachowski's eighth feature as director, arriving eighteen years after The Matrix Revolutions and following Bound, the original trilogy, Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Jessica Henwick and Neil Patrick Harris among the cast. Wachowski wrote the screenplay with David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon, and produced alongside Grant Hill and James McTeigue.
Made for around 190 million dollars, the film returned roughly 156 million worldwide, a weak result against its budget, and the large credited cast and crew reflect the scale of the production. On IMDb it holds 5.6 out of 10 from about 302,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from far fewer. The critics' rating of 6.2 from 364 reviews places professional opinion close to the audience scores on IMDb, rather than above them.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming in San Francisco caused discontent and outrage among local residents due to damage to buildings and the street lighting system. As with the filming of the 2021 action films “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (Destin Daniel Cretton) and “Venom 2” (Andy Serkis), the filmmakers were forced to pay $420,000 to the San Francisco Police Department for filming permits.
- According to director and screenwriter Lana Wachowski, her decision to return to Neo and Trinity in the sequel was due to the death of both her parents (within five weeks of each other) and a close friend. Furthermore, she herself considered Neo and Trinity to be extremely important people in her own life. As for her sister, Lilly Wachowski, she held the opposite view, and recent losses convinced her not to participate in the project.
- On the very first day of filming in Berlin, Priyanka Chopra Jonas was forced to deliver all her lines in front of the entire cast of the film against the backdrop of a luxurious sunset, as insisted upon by director Lana Wachowski. According to the actress, the shooting lasted 45 minutes and completely exhausted her.
- The first film in the franchise, which was originally planned to be shot in Chicago, Illinois – the hometown of the Wachowskis and the city that served as the prototype for the city in which the first three films of the franchise take place – had to abandon the idea of filming in Chicago due to the exorbitant growth of the film's budget during pre-production.
- According to Keanu Reeves, the jump with Carrie-Anne Moss from the roof of a skyscraper located at 44 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, was performed with almost no use of computer graphics, only using safety cables. Officially, the building has 43 floors, but there are another 2-3 technical floors located between them and the roof. During the two days of filming, the actors jumped from the top 20 times.
- Costume designer Lindsay Pugh asked Tom Davies to create new sunglasses for the film's characters. Davies had previously worked on creating glasses for other films, and for the 4th installment of the franchise, he created 200 pairs of glasses.
- Lana Wachowski herself filmed the action scenes, so a second unit wasn't needed – unlike the filming of the first two sequels to the franchise in 2003.
