Short description

Dog is a 2022 American comedy-drama about Jackson Briggs, a former Army Ranger. Briggs wants to return to active duty, but a head injury keeps getting him turned down. When a fellow soldier dies, Briggs is given the job of delivering the man's military working dog, a Belgian Malinois named Lulu, to the funeral. Because the dog will not fly, the two travel by road down the Pacific coast, a trip that tests them both and gradually builds a bond between them.

The film was directed by Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin, with Carolin writing the screenplay and Tatum producing alongside Gregory Jacobs and Peter Kiernan. It was Tatum's first time in the director's chair, and he also plays Briggs. The credited cast runs to 43 actors, with smaller roles including a deli manager and a deli teenager, as well as several Rangers.

Made for about $20 million, the film took roughly $85 million worldwide, a healthy return on its budget. On TMDB it holds a 7.3 out of 10 from around 1,810 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.2 out of 10 from 159 reviews, so audiences rated it noticeably higher than reviewers did.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Three dogs – Britta, Lana 5, and Zuza – played the role of Lulu. They all resemble German Shepherds, but are actually Belgian Malinois, which are well-suited for police work or military service. The filmmakers found them at a kennel in Amsterdam that trains dogs for military service.
  • The film is dedicated to the memory of Lulu, Channing Tatum's dog, who passed away from cancer.
  • When the coronavirus pandemic began, work on the film was interrupted, and the break lasted nine months. Channing Tatum and the trainers had enough time to work with the dogs and prepare them for filming. After filming was completed, three trainers decided to take the dogs they had worked with on the film.
  • The credits state that the film is dedicated to the memory of Lulu. This refers to Tatum's dog, who died of cancer.
