Chongqing Blues follows Lin Quanhai, the captain of a merchant vessel who returns from half a year at sea to learn that his twenty-five-year-old son, Lin Bo, has been shot dead by police. Unable to accept the scant facts he is given, he sets out to piece together the circumstances of the killing. His search takes him back to Chongqing, the city where he once lived, and to people who knew his son far better than he did. What he finds there forces him to reckon with how much of his child's life he missed and with the weight of his own long absences as a father. The film was directed by Wang Xiaoshuai, who wrote the screenplay with Yishu Yang and also served as a producer alongside Isabelle Glachant and Hsu Hsiao-ming. It stars Wang Xueqi as Lin Quanhai, with Fan Bingbing, Qin Hao, Wang Ziyi, Li Fei'er and Ding Jiali in supporting roles. Released in 2010, it sits between the director's earlier features and the later So Long, My Son (2019) and Above the Dust (2025). Its ratings place it in modest but respectful territory: on IMDb it holds a 6.4 from just over three hundred votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from a much smaller sample of ten.
