Dating Amber

Eddie and Amber are classmates in mid-1990s Ireland who do not fit in and hide their sexuality from those around them. To put a stop to the rumours and the homophobic bullying, they agree to pretend to be a couple. Eddie, timid and set on following his father into the army, and Amber, drawn to punk and saving up to leave for London, each have a different idea of what the arrangement is for. As the pretence becomes harder to sustain, Eddie retreats further into denial, while Amber comes to see that her friend's chosen path may put him in danger.

David Freyne wrote and directed the film, his second feature after The Cured (2017), followed by Eternity (2025). Fionn O'Shea and Lola Petticrew lead as Eddie and Amber, with Sharon Horgan, Barry Ward, Simone Kirby and Evan O'Connor among the supporting cast of 25 credited performers. Made in Ireland and Belgium, it runs 92 minutes.

The film was released in July 2020. Its ratings sit close together and indicate a generally favourable response: 7 on IMDb from 8,700 votes and 7.1 on TMDB from 186 votes, with critics somewhat higher at 7.3 from 51 reviews.
