Guru is a gifted athlete and a devoted son who puts others before himself, even deliberately losing a competition so a rival's dream can come true. When almost everyone turns away from him, a young woman named Abhinaya learns what he actually did and grows close to him. Guru also has the power to see events before they happen, and among the visions he receives is an attempt on Abhinaya's life by a man who looks exactly like him.
The film was directed by Bharathan, who also wrote the screenplay. It is the third film he directed, following Amirtham in 2006 and Azhagiya Tamil Magan itself arriving in 2007. Vijay plays both Guru and his look-alike Prasad, with Shriya Saran as Abhinaya and Namitha as Dhanalakshmi; Santhanam appears as Guru's friend, Ashish Vidhyarthi as Abhinaya's father and Geetha as Guru's mother. Swargachitra Appachan produced for Pyramid Saimira and Swargachitra, and the film runs 171 minutes.
Azhagiya Tamil Magan was released in November 2007. On IMDb it holds a score of 5.2 from roughly 4,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.4 from far fewer votes, a narrower and more modest sample. The two ratings sit close together, placing the film in middling territory with audiences rather than at either extreme.
