As They Made Us

As They Made Us centres on Abigail, a divorced mother of two who is trying to hold her family together while also making room in her life for a new relationship. Her brother Nathan has long been apart from the rest of them, and her ageing parents, Eugene and Barbara, need more care than they will admit. When Eugene's health declines sharply, Abigail finds herself pressed into the role of go-between, pushing for a reconciliation that the others do not necessarily want, while her own fresh start keeps being set aside. The film moves between comedy, drama and romance as it follows her attempts to balance those competing demands.

The 2022 American production runs 96 minutes and was written and directed by Mayim Bialik, her first feature behind the camera. Dianna Agron plays Abigail, with Simon Helberg as Nathan, Candice Bergen as Barbara and Dustin Hoffman as Eugene; Justin Chu Cary and Charlie Weber also appear. Bialik had been known chiefly as an actress before stepping into this role.

Reaction has been mixed. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.8 from around 2,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.3 from a much smaller pool of 53 votes, suggesting a modest and divided audience rather than a broad endorsement.
