Martin is a law student who takes a job as a night watchman at a hospital mortuary so he can support his studies. The work seems quiet and undemanding, giving him time to prepare for his courses. That changes when the victims of a serial killer preying on the city begin arriving at the morgue, and strange incidents start occurring in the basement where Martin works alone. When he meets a woman named Joyce, she tells him about the killer still at large. As evidence mounts, suspicion falls on Martin himself, and even his girlfriend Kalinka and his friend Jens begin to doubt him, leaving him to work out what is happening before he is charged with crimes he did not commit.
Ole Bornedal wrote and directed this Danish horror thriller, his first feature, produced by Michael Obel for Thura Film. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays Martin, with Sofie Gråbøl as Kalinka, Kim Bodnia as Jens, Lotte Andersen as Lotte, Ulf Pilgaard as the commissioner and Rikke Louise Andersson as Joyce, among a credited cast of 24. Bornedal returned to the story four years later with an American remake, and much later with a further film in the series, Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, so this is the starting point of a long-running thread in his filmography.
The film runs 107 minutes. It holds a 7.2 rating on IMDb from around 20,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 from a much smaller base of 338 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.9 from 8 reviews is lower than both audience scores, suggesting viewers have been more receptive to it than reviewers.
