Short description
Set in the provincial region of Austria-Hungary around 1900, this historical romance examines the complicated bond between Adelia Anger, a member of the nobility, and Stefania Chornenko, her maid. After a fire claimed the lives of Stefania's parents and Adelia's mother, Adelia's father adopted the orphaned girl. Despite their different social standings, the two grew up as close as sisters. This deep attachment evolves into a volatile relationship characterized by devotion and care, yet marred by jealousy and mutual manipulation. The stability of their connection is challenged when Adelia marries a sculptor named Petro, and the return of Joseph, a former love interest of Stefania who is now a married priest, further complicates their lives.
The film was directed by Khrystyna Syvolap, following her 2015 work Not Today. The production was handled by FILM.UA Group and the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. The cast features Marianna Januszewicz as Stefania Chornenko and Alesya Romanova as Adelia Skolyk, supported by Roman Lutskyi, Oleksandr Kobzar, Serhii Volosovets, and Sebastian Cybulski. Audience reception has been generally positive, with the film earning a rating of 6.4 on IMDb from 823 votes and a 6.6 on TMDB based on 41 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- To play the lead role, Polish actress Marianna Januszewicz had to learn the Ukrainian language. Eventually, she was not only able to understand it but could communicate quite fluently. However, the actress was still dubbed. Stefa speaks with the voice of Maria Stopnik.
- The theater scene featuring prima ballerina Ekaterina Kukhar and 300 extras was filmed from April 30 to May 2 at the Olga Kobylianska Chernivtsi Musical and Dramatic Theatre. In total, 34 actors and over 500 extras were involved in the entire filming process.
