Set in China around the turn of the twentieth century, Drunken Master III follows a member of the White Lotus Society who is sent to collect a princess. She carries a jade ring that matters to the society's plan to place its own candidate on the imperial throne, since their protege is meant to marry her. The courier, Yeung Kwun, is in fact a patriot tied to Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary movement. He takes the princess, Sam Yuk, and hides with the father of the future folk hero Wong Fei-Hung.
Lau Kar-leung directed and appears in the cast as Uncle Yan. The screenplay is by Stanley Siu Wing, and Chris Lee Kin-Sang produced. Andy Lau plays Yeung Kwun, with Michelle Reis as Sam Yuk, Willie Chi Tin-Sang as Wong Fei-Hung, Adam Cheng Siu-Chow as Wong Kei-Ying, and Simon Yam as a bus passenger. The film runs 91 minutes and belongs to the martial arts comedy genre.
The film came out in Hong Kong in July 1994, the same year as Lau Kar-leung's The Legend of Drunken Master and the tenth of the eleven titles listed among his directing credits. Audience scores are modest and split: on IMDb it holds 5.1 from 527 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.9 from 25 votes, a much smaller sample. Both point to a muted reception rather than a widely embraced entry in the series.
