Lars Lindstrom is a shy young man living in a small Midwestern town, where he keeps to himself despite the efforts of his brother Gus and sister-in-law Karin to draw him out. When Lars announces that he has met a woman named Bianca online and that she will be visiting, his family is relieved at first. Their surprise comes when Bianca turns out to be a life-size doll Lars ordered over the internet and treats as a real person. Following the advice of a doctor, Karin and Gus decide not to confront him, and the whole community gradually plays along, welcoming Bianca at home, at church and around town.
The film was directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Nancy Oliver. Ryan Gosling plays Lars, with Emily Mortimer and Paul Schneider as Karin and Gus, Patricia Clarkson as the doctor, and Kelli Garner as Lars's coworker Margo. It was made for about 12 million dollars and took in roughly 11 million worldwide, and it holds a 7.3 rating on IMDb from around 167,000 votes and a 7.2 on TMDB. It was the first of the films Gillespie directed, followed by Mr. Woodcock, Fright Night, Million Dollar Arm, The Finest Hours, I, Tonya, Cruella and Dumb Money. A film critics' rating of 7.3 from 137 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
