Riders of Justice

Markus is a Danish soldier serving abroad when his wife is killed in a train derailment. He returns home to look after his teenage daughter, Mathilde, and is trying to get through his grief when Otto, a mathematician who was also on the train, shows up with two odd colleagues, Lennart and Emmenthaler. The three men have worked out that the crash was not the accident it appeared to be, and their calculations point toward a criminal group. Markus, who initially wants to be left alone, is drawn into their effort to find out who was behind the deaths.

Anders Thomas Jensen directed and wrote the film, his sixth feature after Men & Chicken and the one before The Last Viking. Mads Mikkelsen plays Markus, with Nikolaj Lie Kaas as Otto, Lars Brygmann as Lennart, Nicolas Bro as Emmenthaler, Andrea Heick Gadeberg as Mathilde and Gustav Lindh as Bodashka. The production, mounted by Zentropa Entertainments with partners in Sweden and Finland, had a budget of about 5 million USD.

Riders of Justice reached a worldwide box office of roughly 2 million USD, a modest return against its cost. Reception was stronger than that figure suggests: it holds 7.5/10 on IMDb from 75,000 votes and 7.3/10 on TMDB from a far smaller 1,125 votes, while a critics' rating of 8.1/10 from 140 reviews places professional assessments somewhat above the audience scores.
