Love in the Time of Cholera

Love in the Time of Cholera follows Florentino Ariza, a young telegraph clerk in the Colombian port city of Cartagena, who falls for Fermina Daza the moment he sees her. She is the daughter of a newly arrived, well-off family, and the two begin an exchange of letters. Her father disapproves and takes her away, and in time Fermina marries Juvenal Urbino, a respected physician. Florentino does not abandon his feelings. He builds a career in the river shipping business and waits, across more than half a century, while the lives of all three take their separate courses. The film is an adaptation of the novel by Gabriel García Márquez.

Mike Newell directed, working from a screenplay by Ronald Harwood. The film came after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in Newell's filmography and before Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Javier Bardem plays the adult Florentino, with Giovanna Mezzogiorno as Fermina and Benjamin Bratt as Urbino; John Leguizamo, Fernanda Montenegro and Catalina Sandino Moreno appear among the credited cast of thirty.

Released in 2007, the production carried a budget of about 45 million dollars and returned roughly 5 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 from more than 23,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 from several hundred. A critics' score of 4.8 from 111 reviews places it below the audience figures.
