Michael, a travel writer for the New York Times, arrives in Tel Aviv for a short stay, still reeling from a personal tragedy. He sublets an apartment from Tomer, a young film student, and the two men, separated by a generation and by very different outlooks, share a flat in the city. The clash of habits between them gradually gives way to an unexpected bond, while Michael comes to know Tel Aviv through his host. The arrangement is meant to last days rather than weeks, and much of the film's tension lies in what each man wants from the other and from the time they spend together.
Sublet was released in 2020, runs 89 minutes, and is a comedy-drama with romantic elements, made as a co-production between Israel and the United States. Eytan Fox directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Itay Segal, with Micki Rabinovich and Gal Uchovsky producing. John Benjamin Hickey plays Michael and Niv Nissim plays Tomer, with Lihi Kornowski, Miki Kam, Peter Spears and Tamir Ginsburg in supporting roles.
On TMDB the film holds a rating of 6.7 out of 10 from around 40 votes, a modest sample that suggests a small but generally positive response from viewers. The film sits in the later part of Fox's filmography, after the earlier features that established his reputation for stories about Israeli gay life.
