Short description
Will Atenton leaves behind a high-powered publishing job in New York and moves his wife, Libby, and their two daughters to a quiet New England town. The family's new home turns out to have a violent history: a mother and her children were killed there, and local suspicion fell on the husband who survived. A neighbor who knew the victims helps Will look into what happened, and the more he learns, the harder it becomes for him to separate the town's tragedy from his own life.
Dream House is a drama, mystery and thriller directed by Jim Sheridan, working from a screenplay by David Loucka. It was Sheridan's eighth feature, arriving between Brothers and The Secret Scripture. Daniel Craig plays Will, with Naomi Watts as the neighbor Ann Patterson and Rachel Weisz as Libby; Marton Csokas, Elias Koteas and Taylor Geare also appear. The production, mounted by Morgan Creek and Cliffjack Motion Pictures, carried a budget of about 50 million dollars and took in roughly 40 million worldwide.
Audience responses were moderate, with the film sitting at 6/10 on IMDb from more than 71,000 votes and 6.2/10 on TMDB from a much smaller sample. A critics' rating of 3.7/10 from 87 reviews places it well below those viewer scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- After Morgan Creek Productions re-edited the film as they saw fit, Jim Sheridan officially appealed to the Directors Guild of America to have his name removed from the credits.
- Director Jim Sheridan constantly argued with James J. Robinson, head of Morgan Creek Productions, on set regarding the script and filming. After Sheridan reshot some scenes because they were disliked by audiences during test screenings, the film company took the film away from him and completely re-edited all the material. The result was a trailer that revealed too many plot secrets and nuances. Ultimately, Sheridan and the lead actors, Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz, refused to participate in the film's promotional campaign.
