Set in a remote village in Yunnan during the early years of the Chinese Republic, Dragon follows Liu Jinxi, a papermaker living quietly with his wife Yu and their two sons. When two bandits attempt to rob the village store, Liu intervenes and kills both men. One of the dead robbers turns out to be a notorious fugitive wanted by the government, and the village hails Liu as a hero. Detective Xu Baijiu arrives to investigate and grows suspicious that an ordinary craftsman could have dispatched such a dangerous criminal, and his inquiries begin to unsettle the life Liu has built.
Peter Chan directed the film, working from a screenplay by Aubrey Lam Oi-Wah and Joyce Chan Ka-Yi, with Chan and Jojo Hui Yuet-Chun producing. It sits between The Warlords and American Dreams in China in Chan's filmography. Donnie Yen plays Liu and also served as action director, with Takeshi Kaneshiro as Xu Baijiu, Tang Wei as Yu, and veteran martial-arts actors Jimmy Wang Yu and Kara Wai Ying-Hung in supporting roles.
Released in 2011, the film runs 115 minutes and was a co-production involving Hong Kong, mainland China and Thailand. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 16,000 votes, while on TMDB it averages 6.9 from roughly 327 votes. A critics' score of 6.6 from 25 reviews places it close to the audience result, suggesting a broadly similar response across both groups.
