Bugonia
Short description
Bugonia follows two men steeped in conspiracy thinking who abduct the chief executive of a large pharmaceutical company. Teddy, along with his less sharp cousin Don, is certain that the woman he has taken is not human but an alien being tied to a group he calls the Andromedans. He locks her in a basement and demands that she write a message to an off-world emperor, hoping to secure a place on an alien vessel. The captive CEO, Michelle, is forced to play along while the two men try to prove their beliefs.
The film is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos from a screenplay by Will Tracy, and it sits at the end of a run of features that includes Dogtooth, The Lobster, The Favourite, Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness. Emma Stone, a recurring collaborator in that later stretch, plays Michelle, while Jesse Plemons plays Teddy. The supporting cast includes Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone among twenty-nine credited performers, with 170 credited crew members.
Released in October 2025, Bugonia cost about 55 million dollars to make and returned roughly 44 million worldwide, a shortfall against its budget. Audiences have received it fairly well: it holds a 7.4 rating on IMDb from around 162,000 votes and a 7.3 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of a few thousand. Critics, tracked across 331 reviews, land at the same 7.3 average.
What's left behind the scenes
- Emma Stone agreed to shave her head for the role only if director Yorgos Lanthimos did the same.
- Work on a remake of the film 'Save the Green Planet!' (Chan Joon-hwan) began in 2020. Will Tracy rewrote the script, and Chan Joon-hwan himself was initially planned to direct. Ari Aster became the producer and championed the decision to make the main character a woman (originally a man). In February 2024, it became known that Yorgos Lanthimos would direct the remake.
- Yorgos Lanthimos wanted to film the final scenes at the Acropolis in Athens, but permission was denied. Filming was organized on a beach on the Greek island of Milos in the Aegean Sea.
- Bougonia is an ancient Greek ritual based on the belief that if a bull's carcass is left under certain conditions, bees will appear within it. Figuratively, the word symbolizes rebirth.
