Gamera vs. Jiger

A giant stone statue is removed from Wester Island and taken to Japan for display at Expo '70 in Osaka. Its removal triggers a volcanic eruption and awakens Jiger, a prehistoric monster that follows the statue across the sea. Gamera, the giant turtle who protects humanity, confronts the creature. During their fight Jiger injures Gamera by implanting an egg inside him, and the growing offspring leaves the turtle close to death. Two boys, Hiroshi and Tommy, board a small submarine to travel inside Gamera's body and save him, while Jiger closes in on the world's fair.

Noriaki Yuasa directed the film, his fourth entry in the Gamera series after Gamera, the Giant Monster, Gamera vs. Gyaos and Gamera vs. Guiron. Nisan Takahashi wrote the screenplay and Hidemasa Nagata produced it for Daiei Film. Tsutomu Takakuwa plays Hiroshi Kitayama, with Kelly Varis and Katherine Murphy as Tommy and Susan Williams, Ryô Hayami as Keisuke Sawada, and Franz Gruber and Sho Natsuki as Dr. Williams and Dr. Suzuki. The 83-minute film was released in Japan in March 1970.

Audience reception has been modest: on IMDb it holds a 5.3 rating from about 1,800 votes, and on TMDB a 5.7 from a much smaller number of votes. The scores place it in middling territory for the series, with the limited TMDB sample suggesting the title is far less widely logged than the franchise's better-remembered installments.
