Singham follows Bajirao Singham, an upright police officer serving in a small coastal community on the border between Maharashtra and Goa. His life takes a turn when he is transferred to a city dominated by a powerful criminal figure he had once embarrassed. The gangster, Jaikant Shikre, uses his influence to make the officer's new posting a nightmare, testing Singham's principles as he tries to fight the system without abandoning the law. The film is a remake of the 2010 Tamil movie Singam.
Rohit Shetty directed this 2011 Hindi-language action crime drama, the first title in his directing career listed here before Chennai Express and Singham Returns. Ajay Devgn plays the lead, with Kajal Aggarwal, Prakash Raj, Sachin Khedekar, Ashok Saraf and Murali Sharma in supporting roles. The screenplay was written by Yunus Sajawal and the brothers Farhad and Sajid Samji.
Produced by Reliance Entertainment, the film ran 143 minutes and was made for about 5 million dollars, going on to earn roughly 30 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Reception was mixed to positive: on IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 from 194 votes, while on TMDB the critics' rating stands at 5.3 from seven reviews, below the audience score.
