Gintama: The Movie takes place in a version of feudal Japan that has been conquered and colonized by aliens, where the odd-jobs agency Yorozuya scrapes by on whatever work comes its way. When a series of nighttime attacks on swordsmen spreads fear through the Kabuki district, a brother and sister whose father left them a sword called Benizakura hire the agency to track it down. Their search pulls Gintoki Sakata back toward his past as a samurai, while his friend Katsura disappears after a violent encounter on a bridge, and the trail points toward the renegade Takasugi and his followers.
The film adapts the Benizakura story arc from the original series, and it was the franchise's first theatrical feature. Shinji Takamatsu directed it from a screenplay by Akatsuki Yamatoya. It sits beside his earlier Mobile Suit SD Gundam's Counterattack from 1989 among the films he has directed, and he returned to the series for further theatrical compilations in 2025. The voice cast includes Tomokazu Sugita as Gintoki, Daisuke Sakaguchi as Shinpachi, Rie Kugimiya as Kagura, Akira Ishida as Katsura, Takehito Koyasu as Takasugi and Yutaka Aoyama as Nizou, with 35 credited cast members overall.
Released in April 2010, the film took in about 10 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 7.7 rating from roughly 2,600 voters, and on TMDB a 7.5 from around 108.
