Miss Marx

Miss Marx is a biographical drama about Eleanor "Tussy" Marx, the youngest daughter of Karl Marx. Bright, educated and independent, she works as a translator and actress and campaigns for children's rights, women's rights and the labour movement, determined to continue her father's political work alongside figures such as Friedrich Engels. In 1883 she meets Edward Aveling, and their intense relationship shapes her private life in ways that stand apart from her public role.

Susanna Nicchiarelli wrote and directed the film, which was produced by Gregorio Paonessa and Marta Donatelli. Romola Garai plays Eleanor, with Patrick Kennedy as Edward Aveling, John Gordon Sinclair as Friedrich Engels, Felicity Montagu as Helene Demuth, Karina Fernandez as Olive Schreiner and Emma Cunniffe as Laura Marx. The production involved 42 credited cast members and 70 credited crew, and was made as a Belgian-Italian co-production with backing from Eurimages, RAI, VOO and BeTV.

Released in September 2020 and running 107 minutes, the film holds a rating of 5.8 from around 1,200 votes on IMDb and 5.9 from roughly 130 votes on TMDB. These modest scores from relatively limited audiences suggest a film that found a small viewership rather than broad commercial attention.
