In Regency-era England, Jeremy Malcolm is London's most sought-after bachelor, largely because he has drawn up a written list of the qualities his future wife must possess. When Julia Thistlewaite fails to satisfy one of his requirements, he ends the courtship, leaving her humiliated. Determined to retaliate, Julia persuades her friend Selina Dalton, a country clergyman's daughter, to present herself as the embodiment of Malcolm's ideal and then reject him. The scheme grows complicated once other suitors begin courting Selina, and Malcolm himself starts to suspect that his seemingly perfect match may be something else entirely.
The film is a Regency-era romantic comedy adapted from Suzanne Allaine's novel, directed by Emma Holly Jones, who also produced alongside Laura Rister and Katie Holly. Freida Pinto plays Selina, with Sope Dirisu as Malcolm, Zawe Ashton as Julia, Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Lord Cassidy, Theo James as Captain Henry Ossory and Ashley Park as Gertie Covington. It was a British, Irish and American co-production running just under two hours, released in the summer of 2022.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from roughly 6,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 out of 10 from 118 votes, indicating a modestly received title with a limited audience. Its worldwide box office of about 2 million dollars points to a small-scale release rather than a broad commercial success.
