Short description
Resident Evil: Retribution continues the story of Alice, the last hope of a humanity devastated by the T-virus created by the Umbrella Corporation. The virus has turned much of the world's population into flesh-eating undead. Alice wakes inside one of Umbrella's most secret facilities, where she learns more about her own mysterious past as she makes her way through the complex. With no safe place left, she keeps hunting those behind the outbreak, a pursuit that takes her through Tokyo, New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow and leads to a revelation that forces her to question what she believed about her life. New allies and old friends fight alongside her as she tries to survive a hostile world on the edge of collapse.
Paul W. S. Anderson directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced with Jeremy Bolt and Don Carmody. The film is the tenth of fourteen he has directed, following The Three Musketeers and preceding Pompeii. Milla Jovovich leads as Alice, with Sienna Guillory, Michelle Rodriguez, Aryana Engineer, Li Bingbing and Boris Kodjoe among the cast; 21 cast members and 340 crew are credited.
The film was released in September 2012 and runs 95 minutes. Made for 65 million USD, it took about 240 million USD worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audiences are mixed: it holds 5.3/10 on IMDb from 158,000 votes and 5.8/10 on TMDB from 4,448 votes, while critics gave it 4.3/10 across 74 reviews, making it better received by audiences than by critics.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the 14th minute of the film, a zombie pushes its tentacles through the door of a closet, but when Alice jumps out, the zombie disappears for a second.
- When Alice drives a Rolls-Royce through the burning van on the 54th minute, the 'Spirit of Ecstasy' statuette on the hood of the car disappears, but reappears in the following shots.
- The film is based on the 'Resident Evil' computer game series (1996–present, Capcom).
- At the 80th minute of the film, Alice brushes snow off with her palm and sees a zombie under the ice. When Rain kicks her away in the next frame, the ice is completely covered in snow again.
- On the 76th minute of the film, Rain breaks Leon's left arm, but in the subsequent fight scene, he continues to block and strike with it.
- At the 80th minute of the film, Rain falls through the ice, and the ice fragments beneath her are only a few centimeters thick. When Rain briefly surfaces, it can be seen that the ice around her is significantly thicker.
- In the final showdown, Michelle Rodriguez's character injects herself with the Las Plagas parasite, which first appeared in the fourth installment of the video game of the same name in 2005.
- At the 20th minute of the film, Alice breaks the window of a police car and retrieves a Desert Eagle pistol from the glove compartment. This pistol has never been in service with the Japanese police.
- At the 52nd minute of the film, Alice sideswipes a giant Licker with a Rolls-Royce, but there isn't a single scratch on the car. When, at the 54th minute, Alice dodges an exploding station wagon and drives onto Red Square, claw marks from the Licker appear on the car around the rear left fender.
- When Alice jumps from the exploding ship at the 2-minute mark of the film, many flying debris can be seen near her. However, when Alice falls into the ocean, there are no falling fragments or waves and bubbles from their fall in the water near her.
- When, at the 52nd minute of the film, a giant Licker falls onto a glass display case, the bottles on it don't initially fly in different directions, but immediately turn into a multitude of shards.
- At the 80th minute of the film, Alice shoots at the ice beneath Rain's feet, but in the next frame, no bullet marks are visible on the ice.
- At the 12th minute of the film, a Chevrolet police car drives past Alice on the street, but in the next shot it is replaced by a Ford.
- When Alice shoots a pistol at the camera at the 24th minute of the film, she does not pull the trigger.
- At the 22nd minute of the film, Alice is chased by a crowd of zombies. When she runs inside the building, only one female zombie is running after her.
- At the 84th minute of the film, a Black soldier points Alice down a straight corridor with branches. However, in the next frame, a white soldier stands in his place, and the straight corridor turns into a bend.
- At the 54th minute, a burning van hit by a rocket-propelled grenade crashes into a Jaguar XJ. When Alice breaks through the van, the Jaguar disappears.
- At the 12th minute of the film, when Rain leans out of his car window and picks up Alice and her daughter from the street, she is not wearing a seatbelt. When a zombie tries to grab Alice and her daughter in the next scene, Rain is already buckled up.
- At the 4th minute of the film, Umbrella soldiers shoot fleeing test subjects in the back, but when they fall to the floor, some of the subjects lack entry wounds on their backs.
- On the 74th minute of the film, Rain forces the bullets that hit her out of her body along with drops of blood. When the bullets fall on the snow, there is no trace of the blood.
- At the 53rd minute of the film, a zombie motorcyclist breaks the driver's side window with a burst of automatic fire. In the next frame, it is clearly visible that the glass is completely intact.
- During the filming of the chase scene in Moscow, the license plate number on the Rolls-Royce Phantom was “H520SL177RUS”.
- When Alice drives through the van on the 54th minute of the film, you can notice a special ramp installed under her car, which launched the van into the air during the explosion.
- At the 10th minute of the film, Alice punches a hole in the ceiling, but when she lifts her daughter up through it in the next shot, the hole is significantly larger than the one she made earlier.
- When Alice fights zombies in the corridor at the 23rd minute, the bodies of the lying corpses change their positions or disappear and reappear altogether during scene changes.
- Ariana Engineer was cast as Becky without an audition.
- At the 44th minute of the film, Alice shoots a zombie, and he flies backwards from the shots to the body. When Alice shoots the undead in the head, the shots do not knock him back at all, and he falls dead on the spot.
- On the 56th minute of the film, Alice and her team arrive at the Arbatskaya station on the Filevskaya line of the Moscow Metro, however, the real station looks different.
- At the 36th minute of the film, a nonsensical designation appears on the conning tower of a submarine. Also, Sergei mentions Soviet submarines of the 'Typhoon' project, however, this project was officially called 'Shark,' and the code name 'Typhoon' was only used by NATO countries.
- Several times during the final battle, bone fractures are shown in X-ray vision mode. The same technique is used in the 2011 game Mortal Kombat. Paul W. S. Anderson directed the film “Mortal Kombat” (1995).
- Jensen Ackles auditioned for the role of Leon Kennedy, but Johan Urb ultimately landed the part.
