Amigo is a historical drama set in the Philippines in 1900, during the Philippine-American War. Rafael Dacanay is the head of a barrio in a rice-growing area of Luzon. His brother Simón leads the local guerrilla fighters, while American troops have occupied the village and a hardened officer pressures Rafael to help in the hunt for the insurgents. Caught between the occupying force and the patriots who see any cooperation as betrayal, Rafael must weigh decisions that carry deadly consequences for himself and his community.
John Sayles wrote and directed the film, the ninth feature in his directing career following Silver City in 2004. Chris Cooper plays Colonel Hardacre, with Garret Dillahunt as Lieutenant Compton, Ronnie Lazaro as Simón, Rio Locsin as Corazon, Dane DeHaan as Gil and DJ Qualls as Zeke. The production, a Mexican-American co-production made for about two million dollars, drew modest audiences: it holds a 6.3 rating from roughly 700 voters on IMDb and a 4.9 from a much smaller pool on TMDB.
Critics gave the film a rating of 6.3 from 45 reviews, matching the IMDb figure closely. The film runs 128 minutes.
