Lincoln is set during the final months of the American Civil War, as Abraham Lincoln works to secure passage of a constitutional amendment abolishing slavery. The president must hold together a divided nation and a fractious cabinet while managing a war that could end before the amendment is ratified, which would allow the defeated South to preserve the institution. The film follows his efforts to gather the votes needed in Congress, alongside the pressures on his family and his administration during this period.
Steven Spielberg directed the film, the 33rd of 40 features he has directed in chronological order, following The Adventures of Tintin and preceding Bridge of Spies. Tony Kushner wrote the screenplay, and Spielberg produced with Kathleen Kennedy. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Lincoln, with Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln, David Strathairn as William Seward, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Robert Lincoln, James Spader as W.N. Bilbo and Hal Holbrook as Preston Blair. The credited cast runs to 135 names. It was adapted from Doris Kearns Goodwin's book Team of Rivals.
Made for about 65 million dollars, the film took roughly 275 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from around 284,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.8 out of 10 from about 4,100 votes. A critics' rating stands at 8.1 out of 10 from 288 reviews, higher than the audience scores on both sites.
