Short description
The Thursday Murder Club is a crime comedy about a group of retirees who spend their leisure time studying cold cases. While their hobby begins as a mental exercise and a way to pass the time, the friends are eventually drawn into a genuine murder investigation. The plot follows these amateur sleuths as they use their own methods to help the police solve a real crime.
Directed by Chris Columbus, this project is the 16th film in his career, following The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two. The movie features an ensemble cast including Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, David Tennant, and Jonathan Pryce. Produced by Amblin Entertainment, Maiden Voyage Pictures, and Jennifer Todd Pictures, the film had a runtime of 118 minutes.
Audience reception was moderately positive, with a rating of 6.5/10 on IMDb based on 84,000 votes and a 6.6/10 on TMDB from 1,144 votes. Film critics gave the movie a slightly lower score of 6.2/10 across 139 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Helen Mirren drives an Aston Martin Vanquish sports car in the film. The same car was driven by Pierce Brosnan (who plays Ron here) as agent 007 in Lee Tamahori’s action film "Die Another Day" (2002).
- The incident discussed by the characters at the beginning of the film is titled "The Woman in White." This is the name of the novel by Wilkie Collins (1824-1889), written in 1860. Many consider this novel to be one of the earliest works of the detective genre.
- Filming took place in the United Kingdom from June 27th to September 11th, 2024.
- When Elizabeth is asked what she was doing in Poland, she answers that she worked in a traveling circus. John le Carré used the term "circus" to refer to the British Secret Intelligence Service.
- The first to come up with the idea of an elderly, yet sharp-minded individual investigating crimes was Agatha Christie, when she introduced Miss Marple in the 1927 story "The Tuesday Night Club."
