Short description
In Paris's 13th arrondissement, the lives of four young people intersect and overlap. Émilie, Camille, Nora and Amber form a shifting group of friends and lovers, sometimes both at once. Émilie is drifting through casual jobs after finishing her studies, Camille teaches and keeps his romantic entanglements uncomplicated, Nora has come to the city to leave her past behind and resume her law studies, and Amber earns money through erotic services online. Their paths cross in the Olympiades neighbourhood of the district, and their attractions and relationships rearrange themselves around one another.
Jacques Audiard directed the film, his seventh, arriving between The Sisters Brothers (2018) and Emilia Pérez (2024). He wrote the screenplay with Céline Sciamma and Léa Mysius, and produced it with Valérie Schermann. The cast includes Lucie Zhang as Émilie, Makita Samba as Camille, Noémie Merlant as Nora and Jehnny Beth as Amber.
The film opened in November 2021 and took in about 2 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from roughly 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.9 out of 10 from around 415 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 110 reviews places it in line with the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- An adaptation of three short stories by cartoonist Adrian Tomine. The character played by Makita Samba was created specifically for this adaptation.
- Three days before filming began, the entire film was rehearsed on a theater stage in Paris. This was done as a rehearsal and also to speed up filming, which was important during the period of COVID restrictions.
- The action unfolds in the Paris district known as “Les Olympiades.” It is characterized by apartment buildings constructed in the 1970s. It is known as the largest Chinatown in Europe.
