The Curse
Short description
A Tennessee farming community is under pressure from a real estate developer buying up land in the hope that a new dam and recreation area will be built nearby. Nathan Crane, a stern and deeply religious farmer, refuses to sell. After a storm, a glowing object crashes on his property, and whatever seeps from it into the soil and well water begins to change the farm: crops and livestock rot from within, and members of the household turn violent and monstrous. Nathan's stepson Zack and Zack's sister are left to fend off their own transformed family, while a local doctor who suspects the truth struggles to convince anyone.
The Curse was directed by David Keith and written by David Chaskin, drawing on a story by H.P. Lovecraft. It was produced by Ovidio G. Assonitis as an Italian-American co-production, with a cast led by Wil Wheaton as Zack, Claude Akins as Nathan, Malcolm Danare, Cooper Huckabee and John Schneider. It followed Keith's earlier work as a director and is among the horror features he made before concentrating on acting.
The film runs 92 minutes. Audiences have been modest in their response: on IMDb it holds 5.1 out of 10 from about 4,500 votes, and on TMDB 5 out of 10 from 142 votes, figures that point to a small, mixed reception rather than a widely embraced one.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to Wil Wheaton, he and his younger sister Amy Wheaton were treated terribly on set: the 13-year-old actor did not want to agree to the role, but his parents, who were promised a substantial fee, a trip to Italy, and a role for Amy by the producers, pressured him. The child actors worked 12 hours a day without breaks, director David Keith used drugs, and instead of makeup and special effects, everything was real: Wil's character, without the actor's knowledge, was pushed into real cow manure in one scene, and the cuts on Amy's body and face after the chicken attack were also not artificial – makeup artists applied them with a scalpel. Since then, the actor has hated everything related to 'The Curse'.
