Tetsuo: The Iron Man
Short description
Tetsuo: The Iron Man is a Japanese horror and science fiction film about a man whose body begins turning into metal. A figure known as the Metal Fetishist is obsessed with inserting pieces of metal into his own flesh, and after a roadside encounter with a businessman and his companion, a curse passes to the businessman. Metal growths start breaking through his face and limbs, and he is pursued by a woman whose hand has become metal and tubing. The transformation spreads until he confronts the Metal Fetishist. Shinya Tsukamoto wrote, directed and produced the film, and also plays the Metal Fetishist. Tomorowo Taguchi plays the Salaryman, with Kei Fujiwara as the Girlfriend and Nobu Kanaoka as the Woman in Glasses.
The film runs 67 minutes and was released in 1989. It is the earliest of six features listed for Tsukamoto, arriving before A Snake of June, Kotoko, Venice 70: Future Reloaded, Shadow of Fire and Mr. Nelson, Did You Kill People?, and it was produced through Japan Home Video, K2 Spirit and Kaijyu Theater. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 out of 10 from around 29,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from a few hundred votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 18 reviews places it roughly level with the IMDb audience score and close to the TMDB figure.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was shot in black and white because its creators perfectly understood how difficult it would be to watch in color, and they wanted the audience to “at least sit through to the end of the film.” This decision proved extremely beneficial in obtaining a rating, as blood was difficult to distinguish from objects in the frame.
- Many actors and members of the film crew left the project, and only Tsukamoto and Tomoro Taguchi worked on it until the end.
- The DVD release included “Tetsuo, the First Version,” which was 10 minutes longer than the original 67-minute version.
- An adaptation of a play that Shin'ya Tsukamoto (director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer, and production designer) wrote and staged during his student years.
