Buddy "Aces" Israel is a Las Vegas stage magician who has ties to organized crime. When he agrees to testify against the mob boss Primo Sparazza, a reward of one million dollars is offered to anyone who kills him before he can take the stand. The FBI places Buddy under guard in a Lake Tahoe hotel, assigning agents Richard Messner and Donald Carruthers to keep him alive. Buddy proves a difficult witness to protect, and once word of the bounty spreads, a varied collection of hitmen, bounty hunters and gangsters converges on Lake Tahoe, each hoping to claim the money.
Joe Carnahan wrote and directed the film, which followed his debut Narc. Ryan Reynolds and Ray Liotta play the two agents, with Andy García as the FBI official overseeing the operation and Alicia Keys, Martin Henderson and Chris Pine among the large credited cast.
Made for about 17 million dollars, the film took in roughly 57 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 157,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 4.8 out of 10 from 157 reviews is noticeably lower than the audience scores.
