The Sorcerer and the White Snake

The Sorcerer and the White Snake draws on an old Chinese legend about a serpent spirit who takes the form of a woman and falls in love with a mortal man. She rescues the herb gatherer Xu Xian and the two begin a life together, but her true nature draws the attention of Fa Hai, a monk and demon hunter convinced that all such beings are evil. When she uses her powers to help people suffering from a plague, Fa Hai resolves to destroy her, setting up a conflict between the couple and the sorcerer. The story also follows the white snake's companion, a green snake, and her attachment to Fa Hai's disciple Neng Ren.

Tony Ching Siu-Tung directed; it is the twelfth of the thirteen films he has directed, arriving between An Empress and the Warriors and Jade Dynasty. The cast is led by Jet Li as Fa Hai, with Huang Shengyi as the white snake, Raymond Lam Fung as Xu Xian, Charlene Choi as the green snake, Wen Zhang as Neng Ren and Vivian Hsu as the Ice Harpy, among thirty-five credited performers. The screenplay was written by Sze-To Cheuk-Hon, Tsang Kan-cheong and Charcoal Tan.

Released in 2011, the Hong Kong and Chinese co-production runs 100 minutes and blends action with fantasy. Reception was mixed: it holds 5.8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 9,300 votes and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 328 votes, while a critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 14 reviews places professional opinion slightly below the audience scores.
