Short description

In a small Tennessee town, a former blues musician named Lazarus has withdrawn into a bitter life after his wife leaves him. One morning he finds Rae, a young woman known throughout the area for her promiscuous behaviour, badly beaten and left at the roadside. Lazarus takes her into his home and, convinced he can help her, keeps her there against her will while trying to change the course of her life. The situation grows more complicated when Ronnie, Rae's boyfriend, returns from military service.

Craig Brewer wrote and directed the film, following his 2005 debut Hustle & Flow. Samuel L. Jackson plays Lazarus, with Christina Ricci as Rae and Justin Timberlake as Ronnie Morgan. S. Epatha Merkerson, John Cothran and David Banner appear in supporting roles. The production had a budget of 15 million USD and returned 11 million USD worldwide, less than its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 from around a thousand votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.3 out of 10 from 162 reviews, close to the audience figure.

Brewer's later directing work includes Footloose, Dolemite Is My Name, Coming 2 America and Song Sung Blue.
