Short description
María and Ingvar live together on a remote Icelandic farm, tending a flock of sheep in a quiet landscape far from anyone else. Their life changes when one of the animals gives birth to a strange creature, a newborn that is partly human and partly lamb. The couple take it into their home and decide to raise it as their own child, and the arrival of this new family member brings them happiness for a time, though it also sets off events that will threaten everything they have.
Lamb (Dýrið) is the 2021 feature debut of director Valdimar Jóhannsson, who wrote the screenplay with Sjón. Noomi Rapace stars as María, alongside Hilmir Snær Guðnason as Ingvar, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson as Pétur, and Ingvar E. Sigurðsson as Creature. The film was produced across Iceland, Poland and Sweden on a budget of 5 million dollars.
Released in August 2021, the film drew an IMDb rating of 6.3 from 44,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 6.4 from 1,085 votes, while the critics' rating stood higher at 7.2 from 189 reviews. Its worldwide box office of 3 million dollars means it earned back less than it cost to make, a modest commercial result for an unusual drama mixing fantasy and horror elements.
